Princess Catherine has been hospitalized due to a planned surgery, Kensington Palace revealed in a rare personal statement this morning.

“Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales was admitted to hospital yesterday for planned abdominal surgery,” the statement read. “The surgery was successful, and it is expected that she will remain in hospital for 10 to 14 days, before returning home to continue her recovery.”

It’s unclear what led Kate to need surgery, but Bazaar.com has learned that her condition is not cancerous.

The palace added in its statement that, based on the medical advice the princess is receiving, she will likely not return to her public duties until after Easter, which falls on March 31 this year.

“The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate. She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private,” the statement continued. “Kensington Palace will, therefore, only provide updates on Her Royal Highness’s progress when there is significant new information to share.”

The palace added that Kate wants to apologize to anyone “concerned for the fact that she has to postpone her upcoming engagements. She looks forward to reinstating as many as possible, as soon as possible.”

Neither Kate nor Prince William have spoken publicly about her medical issue.

Kate’s last major engagement was last month, when she, William, and their three children (Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis) officially rang in the holidays with their annual Christmas Day service at Sandringham. The royal couple and their kids coordinated in blue and green outfits for the festive occasion.
